Cataract Surgery
With new technological advances, patients commonly see better without glasses after surgery than they have ever seen before.
Cataract surgery is one of the most advanced micro-surgical procedures performed in the world. We offer our patients two unique types of cataract surgery.
Traditional Cataract Surgery
During traditional cataract surgery, we remove the cataract and replace it with a special lens implant, fit exactly to your eye. At Bluegrass Eye Surgery, we specialize in traditional monofocal lens implants. The monofocal lenses are a great option to provide clear distance vision covered by medicare and traditional insurance. However, most people require bifocals or reading glasses to achieve full visual function, especially for near tasks.
Refractive Cataract Surgery
In the past few years, cataract surgery has taken a quantum leap forward in the visual rehabilitation available for patients. New technology for cataract removal allows for more rapid visual recovery. Patients commonly see well enough to drive a car without glasses the very next day after surgery. Another advance has been new lens technology that allows for patients to see at a distance and up close without the need for glasses. We specialize in the Crystalens HD, Restor Aspheric and Acrysof Toric intraocular lenses. This technology even surpasses what Lasik surgery can provide for patients over forty. If you are interested in being free from your glasses, ask about our premium refractive cataract surgery packages.
Lasik Surgery
Many patients say Lasik is a modern day miracle and one of the best decisions they have ever made.
At Bluegrass Eye Surgery, we are committed to helping patients achieve their goals to be free from the hassle of wearing glasses or contact lenses. Whether you travel, play sports, or just want to see the alarm clock when you wake up, freedom from glasses and contact lenses can enhance your quality of life.
Perfection
As we chase perfection in laser vision correction, it is our uncompromising position to only offer the very best laser technology. The Bausch and Lomb Technolas 217z, with orbscan and zywave aberrometry, combine to provide the very best wavefront customized Lasik. Based on the study completed for FDA approval, 99.7% of eyes achieved 20/40 vision or better without glasses, and 91.5% of eyes achieved 20/20 vision or better. With this laser, many of the night vision problems patients encountered with traditional Lasik have been solved.
Peace of Mind
In the past, and still in many practices today, a metal blade is used to mechanically cut a thin layer of corneal tissue to create a flap. The flap would be folded over and the laser would be applied to the remaining cornea. This is one of the main causes for intra-operative complications, and although incredibly rare, can be problematic. Engineers in the US and in Germany saw a way to improve the safety and reliability of this portion of the procedure using a laser. Now, more than 50% of all LASIK procedures performed are done with a femtosecond laser to create the flap, rather than a metal blade. Bluegrass Eye Surgery is the region’s only all laser Lasik facility and we pride ourselves on that commitment to safety.
We also offer a procedure called LASEK (Laser Assisted Sub-Epithelial Keratomileusis). This procedure allows patients with thin corneas to safely have laser refractive surgery, without the concern of long term complications. During your evaluation, we will let you know which type of procedure you would qualify for.
We offer a free Lasik screening examination. If you have been thinking about freedom from glasses or contact lenses, call today to schedule your appointment.
Botox Cosmetic
It is no secret that the eyes are the centerpiece of expressivity and beauty in the face.
At Bluegrass Eye Surgery, we strive to provide products and services that enhance a patient’s quality of life. As we age, years of squinting, frowning and the effects of sun damage show up as fine lines and wrinkles, often framing the eyes and midface.
In the past, the only way to combat these signs of aging were through surgical procedures such as a facelift, brow lift or eye lift. Now, with a few minutes in the office, we can achieve the reduction of wrinkles and the restoration of your youthful appearance. Read more about Botox.
Macular Degeneration
Dr. Wortz has helped restore 20/20 vision to patients who were once legally blind.
Macular degeneration is one of the leading causes of irreversible blindness in the US. By causing degeneration of the cells that nourish the photoreceptors in the central portion of the retina, most patients experience slowly progressive loss of central vision.
Dry Macular Degeneration
Patients’ vision ranges from 20/20 to legal blindness. This form of the disease is called “dry” age related macular degeneration. Currently, daily vitamin therapy with the intake of 500 milligrams of vitamin C, 400 international units of vitamin E, 15 milligrams of beta-carotene, 80 milligrams of zinc as zinc oxide, and two milligrams of copper as cupric oxide is the only therapy to show a benefit in slowing the progression of disease in a subset of patients. Commonly, patients with dry macular degeneration are asked to monitor their vision at home with the use of an Amsler grid. A wavy appearance to the straight lines on the grid, or new black spots in the grid can signal a serious transformation of the disease.
Wet Macular Degeneration
The dry from of the disease can progress to the second more severe stage called “wet” age related macular degeneration. Patients with this form of the disease experience a rapid onset loss of central vision. In the past, once the macular degeneration had turned into the wet form, there was little to no hope of a patient ever achieving functional central vision again. Tasks like reading, driving, and even seeing the faces of loved ones was no longer possible.
Innovations in Treatment
However, recent advances in medical research have yielded new medicines that can reverse the process of wet macular degeneration. Dr. Wortz trained with some of the pioneering doctors at the University of Kentucky who are world authorities in macular degeneration research and treatment. Dr. Wortz has treated hundreds of patients with wet macular degeneration and in some cases has helped restore 20/20 vision to patients who were legally blind from this disease.
Early diagnosis is one of the most important prognostic factors for successful treatment of wet macular degeneration. In July, Bluegrass Eye Surgery became the first office in the state of Kentucky to have the most advanced tool for diagnosis of wet macular degeneration. The Topcon 3-D OCT is an exciting new tool that takes a high resolution picture of the retina, and takes a 3-Dimensional thickness map of all the retinal layers. The entire test takes about 7 seconds and does not require the use of traditional intravenous dye injection. At Bluegrass Eye Surgery, early diagnosis and early treatment can make the difference between blindness and sight.
Other Treatments
At Bluegrass Eye Surgery, we are prepared to treat most diseases of the eye.
Diabetic eye disease and glaucoma are among the most common eye diseases we treat. In addition to these, we treat dry eye, ocular infections, ocular inflammation, excess and baggy eyelid skin (dermatochalasis), among others.
About Gary Wortz, MD
Dr. Wortz was chosen as the national award winner by the American College of Eye Surgeons.
Dr. Wortz has had many colorful life experiences that shape the way in which he practices medicine. Being raised on a farm in a small town taught him the work ethic needed to succeed in the competitive environment of medical school and residency. Being a devoted husband and father of two has served as a reminder of the joys that come from responsibility. As an active member of his church, Dr. Wortz has had the opportunity to serve the needy through medical missions and community medical outreach. These values and experiences are what Bluegrass Eye Surgery is built on.
Dr. Wortz has excelled professionally as well. He graduated with honors from medical school at the University of Louisville and was then accepted to the University of Kentucky, one of the top surgically-oriented ophthalmology residencies in the country. During his residency, he achieved excellence in clinical and surgical skill and was chosen by the faculty to represent the department as the Chief Resident in Ophthalmology. As the Chief Resident, Dr. Wortz submitted a videotape of one of his most challenging and successful cataract operations to the national cataract competition through the American College of Eye Surgeons. Each videotaped surgery was thoroughly reviewed and scored by the top eye surgeons in the country. After all the entries were scored, Dr. Wortz was chosen as the national award winner. He is the first and only resident from the University of Kentucky to win this award.
